About the Event
Belfast Philharmonic Choir open the 2019/20 concert season with a glorious display of Romantic music and beautiful choral sounds, in the sumptuous acoustic of Fisherwick Church. The main item in the programme will be Dvorak's Mass in D, performed in its original conception for choir and organ. The mass is rich in melodic imagery and was highly regarded from the outset, acclaimed as "a work of remarkable power and effect and fully worthy of the great reputation of its composer" ('Musical Opinion', December 1894). Dvorak used the folk music influences of his homeland alongside his distinct harmonic composition to create a work filled with joy and delight in creation.
The second part of the concert will include two highly popular anthems - Vaughan Williams 'O clap your hands' and Parry's 8-part 'Blest pair of sirens' - and will also feature a stunning example of Gabrieli's polychoral writing in 'Plaudite, psallite, jubilate Deo', with Belfast Philharmonic Choir divided into three and spaced around the church. Truly a concert of sparkling choral music that is not to be missed!
