About the Event

Whether you're currently teaching young singers online, teaching music with social distancing restrictions, or making decisions about adjusting your practices, this three-hour online workshop will give you great ideas for how to make music education work in the autumn and beyond.

The Belfast Philharmonic Youth Choirs spent spring 2020 reworking our leading choral education programme to operate virtually, incorporating new techniques and practices. One of the central projects saw our Youth Choir collaborating with composer Laura Sheils to write a brand new piece of music to record remotely and share online ( In this practical afternoon workshop, the Belfast Philharmonic staff will share ideas and techniques for converting your own musicianship to work online or at distance, including a session led by Artistic Director Lynsey Callaghan and Laura Sheils on composing music with young singers.

The workshop will run from 2.00-5.00pm with a short break. All sessions will have opportunity for discussion and there will be an additional 30 minutes following the workshop to allow attendees to ask further questions, from 5.00-5.30pm.

This workshop would be useful for: Primary teachers; Early years teachers; Post-primary music teachers; Vocal and instrumental teachers; Singers and instrumental performers; Musicianship teachers; Music students; Conductors; and Choral singers.

Pricing: The standard ticket price is £10. The Belfast Philharmonic Society is a charity and our opportunities for fundraising are very limited while concerts are impossible. We want this workshop to be accessible for everyone who would find it useful and our Pay What You Can tickets are £5. If you are in a position to pay the higher ticket price, that will subsidise our cheaper tickets and the continuing work of the Society in choral education.

NB: This workshop will run on Zoom and attendees will be emailed a link the day before the event. (If you book from Friday evening onward you will be emailed a link on Saturday morning.) Please ensure you provide the correct email address for the attendee and that they can access Zoom. The workshop can be attended on Zoom via phone, tablet or computer. If you have any access requirements to allow you to attend the session please let us know during your booking.

On the day each attendee will need to log in separately and will be held in a virtual waiting room until approved. When purchasing tickets, please make sure you add the full name of each attendee if not yourself.

We will record the speaker sessions (not Q&A) and make those available to view for a limited time after the event for ticket-holders only to review material from the talks.

If your educational establishment needs to book a ticket on your behalf with invoice please have them email Laura Bradley:
