About the Event

You are invited to the lecture on Faith and Mystery by Mark Patrick Hederman OSB, the former Abbot of Glenstal Abbey in Limerick.

Before becoming abbot, he was headmaster of the abbey school. He has lectured in philosophy, theology and literature in Ireland, Nigeria and the USA and was a founding editor of the Irish cultural journal ‘The Crane Bag’. He is the author of several books, including The Haunted Inkwell, Walkabout, Underground Cathedrals and The Opal and the Pearl.

In his most recent book, “Living the Mystery” he maintains that the world has never been more in need of religion. It is the lack of it, he says, that is destroying us in so many ways and a false argument between science and scripture needs to be diverted. However, he takes a very interesting approach to this old debate. Religion, he maintains has its own reasons, its own language, its own access to truth. Unless we learn this language and ‘sing this song’ we risk losing our most precious heritage.

Mark Patrick Hederman has lived as a Benedictine monk for over fifty years. This life has taught him how to engage with mystery. In his new book, and in this lecture, he tries to explain as simply as he can how we are able to bring religion back into our lives.

While attendance at the lecture is free of charge please register so that we are able to manage numbers.
