About the Event
Stephen Sexton is working towards a PhD at the Seamus Heaney Centre for Poetry. He was the winner of the inaugural Funeral Services Northern Ireland National Poetry Competition. Stephen’s poem ‘The Curfew’ was selected as Winner of the Poetry Society’s National Poetry Competition in 2017.
This workshop will provide an outline of some of the principles and procedures of ‘found poetry’, discussing its origins in early 20th century art, and considering the implications of collaging, repurposing and reshaping other texts into poems. Kenneth Goldsmith said “Context is the new content”, and we will explore that statement and the ways in which a found poem is framed and how that contributes to its meaning and reception.
