This week we’re in New York meeting with some great new people and checking out the vibrant events scene here.
We attended Startup Grind NYC last night, which is part of a global startup community designed to educate, inspire and connect entrepreneurs. There are events that take place in over 100 cities, across 42 countries and has a community of over 75,000 entrepreneurs. Each month they bring an amazing speaker who shares their story with the community.
After dropping out of Harvard Business School, Alexa launched LearnVest in 2009 to pursue her dream of bringing financial literacy and advice to people across the country.
Her dream was big, and she launched at a time when the financial market was at its worst. However, her determination and hard work paid off, and since then, she has raised over $72 million in financing from investors and employs over 150 people across the US.
One of the best pieces of advice I took from Alexa, which I would like to share was, when talking about success at work, “Take one day at a time and bring 120% every day. Crush it. Rinse and repeat!”
This has obvious relevance to any profession, however I think particularly in event management, where it is so easy to feel completely overwhelmed with your increasing workload that it can often act as a demotivator.
Of course, we will always have to plan ahead in work and organise our schedules so we’re on top of things, and I wouldn’t dream of implying that you don’t give it 120% anyway. However, I know myself that, as much as I love what I do, when I get stressed at work, it can be counterproductive, so the idea to take one day at a time and giving it 120% and seeing what comes from it, if not just for my own personal satisfaction alone, is refreshing.
Event professionals by nature are highly organised, creative, efficient individuals, but you’re only human at the end of the day, and there are only 24 hours in that day! When you’re planning an event (or series of events) you are always going to be under intense periods of stress. Adopting this positive approach to the project could help bring out fresh ideas that you would never have had the head space to think of.
Next time you are organising one of your own events, why not try out some of Alexa’s advice, taking it one day at a time, bringing 120% and, crushing it!
